Keelboat Instructors
The INSS is hiring new keelboat instructors and also looking for those who want to train to become one! We’ve a great problem – courses and other activities are busy and we need to expand our instructing team.
Qualified Keelboat Instructors – Apply Now
Qualified Irish Sailing or Royal Yachting Association Keelboat Instructors are welcome to join the team. We’ll provide full induction training on our programmes, operating procedures and boats. Please send an email to glyn@inss.ie or a message to 0872218585.
We’ve regular and part time work available, including weekdays or weekends and would have sessions that fit in around other commitments. Immediate starts are available, and we’d like to hear from you about further down the line too.
Train to be a Keelboat Instructor
Got a lot of experience yachting and want to do something different, or have you graduated from our courses and would like to train to teach? We’d love to hear from you. Currently we’ve several team members who are either doing a few courses or sessions every so often having retired early, or others who have office based jobs and love getting in the odd weekend of teaching. We’re very flexible and would love to chat about what we could do to assist you in exploring a new avenue using either existing skills or ones we work with you to develop.
Training Programme 1: Skills Development and Coaching
This is for current sailors who’ve got an interest in working over the next 6-8 months on skills on a weekly/2 weekly basis with the coaching focussing on sailing skills to make sure you’re confident and competent afloat.
The next step would be to take an external sailing assessment by an Irish Sailing Instructor Trainer. This is a day long programme which deals with some theoretical knowledge and also puts you through a series of skills assessments afloat. We’ll have worked with you on these skills following a similar programme of coaching that we offer to young people undertaking dinghy instructor training. The process works and we will keep you fully informed of your progress.
The final part of the process is to attend a 5-day instructor course, don’t worry we’ll split this over two weekends to ensure that work commitments can still be met.
Training Programme 2: Active Retirement
This programme is aimed at current experienced sailors, maybe you’re a yacht owner or maybe you instructed when you were younger? The format will be similar to the first training programme, however, we anticipate a more abridged programme. Full training will be provided ahead of an instructor course.
What’s the catch and the cost?
The short answer is “it depends”. If you’re happy to commit to working with us (which is paid work) training and instructor courses will be very low cost. The qualification at the end of this will allow you to teach in an Irish Sailing Recognised Training Centre running keelboat courses. Our objective is to meet future needs of the INSS, however, we do have options with less post-instructor course commitment and we would love to hear from you.
We’re holding an informal information evening on Monday 9th June from 7-8pm in the INSS – all those interested are very welcome to come along. It will mostly function as a Q&A session but there will be a short presentation on each of the training programmes.
If you’re interested in registering your interest, please contact glyn@inss.ie.
