Introduction
The Irish National Sailing & Powerboat School operates from Dún Laoghaire Harbour (pronounced Dunleary) located on South Dublin Bay. The school is one of the largest RYA training centres, with approved 8,500 students each year across youth and national sailing scheme courses, powerboat training and cruising scheme programmes. The school runs two training yachts, the main vessel being an Elan 36 Beaufort Venture which has just been fully overhauled and retrofitted with a new e-propulsion inboard system.
The Role
We’re looking to work with a YMI Sail on an ongoing and annual basis to run a number of Yachtmaster preparatory weeks as well as Coastal Skipper courses. In total we expect 6 courses annually.
We would work with the instructor to design a schedule in such a way that course dates and times work based on travel and other commitments. We’re looking for a mutually beneficial relationship.
Further to this, we run a very full schedule of competent crew and day skipper courses. Which we’d be happy for this instructor to work on too.
The Training Area & Boat
Beaufort Venture is an Elan 36 that meets RYA cruising scheme accreditation and Irish department of transport rules too. She is an electric propelled vessel and as far as were aware the first on a training yacht in the world. This system has been extensively tested and used on courses. There’s little difference from operating a diesel inboard – other than plugging into the marina to refuel. We have a diesel engine (used for the RYA Diesel engine course) in our maintenance facility that is 3 minutes from the marina, so we just pop across during the course to undertake these checks and learnings.
Dún Laoghaire harbour is a large recreational centre, with a 5-star 800 berth marina (where we have several berths). There is 24/7 access and no tidal constraints. Dublin Port is located north of the harbour and has a marina right in the centre of the port operations. Coupled with Howth and Malahide marinas to the north and Greystones Marina, Wicklow and Arklow harbours to the South we have plenty of locations and destination that lend themselves to Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster preparatory programmes.
In terms of support: we have a staffed office at all times while programmes are ongoing and a full time maintenance team that can respond to any issues during course durations. Catering aboard is provided by pre-made gourmet meals that can be cooked in the oven aboard, saving time and making the cooler evenings that bit more manageable. We also fully stock the boat with all food etc ahead of the course and will restock as required. We want the instructor to have time to focus on what they do best, training the student.

A note for UK instructors – UK nationals are permitted to work in Ireland, there no EU 90-days or work permits needed.
