Coastal Skipper
The Coastal Skipper course is full of advanced skippering techniques for yacht sailors with considerable knowledge of sailing and navigation, wanting to undertake coastal passages by day and night.
- Intricate Passage Planning
- Preparation for Offshore Passages
- Pilotage plans for entering into harbours and coves by day and night
- In depth skippering including all responsibilities
- Advanced Yacht Handling under power
- Heavy weather sailing and preparation
- Understanding how to abandon a vessel.
Like the Day Skipper course, this course consists of skippered passages in a variety of situations. Each trainee will skipper more challenging passages and learn more about passage planning, pilotage by day and night, boat handling, safety and emergency situations. There is a residential option if required.
Courses start at the Dun Laoghaire Marina on the first day at 9.30am. Then an itinerary is agreed for the week, depending on tides, weather etc.

Required experience
- 15 days sailing, 2 days as skipper, 300 miles, 8 night hours
- The course is designed for those with theoretical knowledge to the standard of the RYA Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Theory Course.
