Advanced Powerboat Certificate

The Advanced Powerboat Course will allow powerboaters to gain skills in boat handling, seamanship, pilotage and navigation, at both day and night in coastal waters. Some pre-course preparation maybe needed depending on your experience.

Saturdays 9:30am-9pm, Sundays 10am-5pm
Minimum Age :
16 years
  • Boat Preparation
  • Boat Handling; holding station, coming alongside at speed, lee shore landings
  • Rough weather skills
  • Meteorology; forecast sourcing and interpretation, implications for powerboating
  • Navigation; at day and night using GPS, depth sounder, steering and hand bearing compass
  • Passage Planning
  • International Collision Regulations, day and night shapes
  • Safety, search patterns, sea anchor usage
  • Basic maintenance, trailing and storage

Previous Experience & Pre-Requisites

This is an advanced course which assumes strong boat handling and significant previous experience. In addition, there are a number of pre-requisite certificates and qualifications you must hold to attend the course. Pre-Requisites - Boat Handling/Driving Experience

  • Participants must hold a National Powerboat Certificate, or an equivalent certificate, such as the RYA Level 2 Powerboat Handling Certificate.
  • Participants must have been boating regularly with a minimum of 32 hrs logged as helm following this above course completion. This can be self-certified logs, you don't need to have someone else sign off on the hours.
  • We would recommend having also completed the Intermediate Powerboat Course.

Pre-Requisites - Theoretical Knowledge and Shorebased

  • Candidates must hold a course completion certificate from the Irish Sailing โ€œCoastal Navigation for Small Boats courseโ€ or equivalent.
  • We recommend that participants hold a VHF radio operators certificate and a First Aid certificate.

Pre-Course Assessment

An assessment at the beginning of the course may be required at our discretion. This is to ensure that all participants are at an appropriate skill level to absorb new knowledge and skills.
